Wu Qi
Wu Qi’s Interpretation of the Night

Despite our constant efforts, we will never step out of the boundless darkness. The arrival of night is a prelude to darkness. It is a symbolic reality of the physical world, or a seduction; night means the expectation of mystery, and the anticipation of the unexpected; night encourages desire and fans evil; night also covers and relieves pain, allowing you to moan and struggle with it. There is a dark corner in everyone’s heart. In this corner we reflect upon life’s significance to us as individuals and the ineffable freedom we enjoy during the night. Wu Qi’s night scene is a reflection of his attitude toward night. His night belongs to him and his fellow dreamers. Fascinated and addicted, he lingers on in the darkness. He is so much involved in night games that he is not only a player but also a creator of games himself.

At the very beginning, Wu Qi focuses on the digital images of the night with lamplights. This is beyond question due to the fact that Wu majored in painting in college. Pursuing visual impacts, he found himself greatly drawn to the world of night. Playing the role of an observer, he then looks for coincidence. Like most photographers, he is a “hunter” who keeps alert so as to take action anytime in the game. Moreover, Wu Qi immerses himself in the situation that he himself ahs created, staging photographs and designing a scene emphasizing the relationship between reality and fantasy. And the game doesn’t end. Wu Qi waits for people to pass by him or other actors (he himself also plays a role in the scene) in a staged backdrop, capturing every dramatic moment. What Wu Qi does is thought provoking. The interplay between chance and certainty enlarges and enriches the spatial narrative of images. This is Wu Qi’s trilogy of night, which extends to the unbounded darkness.

In addition, as far as I’m concerned, at the very end of this experience Wu Qi will understand that his existence is by chance. That is why we are aware of his weirdness, bewilderment and anxiety when appreciating his night scenes. At the same time, however, we strongly feel the night’s tenderness, ambiguity, uneasiness, and restlessness. Closely linked with his soul, the night is a orld that accepts every intruder. We find in Wu Qi’s images night’s significance for us. Night can both be associated with the daytime and exist by itself. Once you immerse yourself in night, desires, dreams, helplessness, and solitude can be comforted and tolerated. Although eventually the day will return, another night will follow. And inevitably every one of us will be lost in the boundless darkness.

Wu Qi’s night shows the fragmentation and loneliness of mankind. Those who roam around at night are primarily homeless individuals. And being homeless is the most embarrassing experience for people in contemporary society.

Wu Qi’s night is marginal; so are his images. And Brassai’s night is only a record of a city’s night. His night is the ecpression of individuals’ innermost feelings during the night. With the help of digital technology, he visualizes a unique atmosphere and enriches the visual experience of night.
